The Osmosis Exchange is a flash exchange based on creating fanworks for canons that you haven't consumed, and have only heard about via osmosis.
Schedule:
• Signups/nominations open: Monday November 4th 11:59PM
• Signups close, assignments sent out: Thursday November 7th 11:59PM (countdown)
• Works due, collection revealed: Sunday November 10th 11:59PM (countdown)
• Authors revealed: Wednesday November 13th 11:59PM
Nominations and signups run concurrently. All times are EST.
How does it work?
For this exchange, participants request fandoms that they have consumed, and offer fandoms that they only know via osmosis. For sprawling canons, it's possible to request a specific aspect of canon you've consumed and offer another aspect that you have not, even if they fall under the same umbrella fandom. For example, it is possible to sign up requesting Batman (Comics), but offer Green Lantern (Comics).
Considering you will be producing a fanwork for this canon, we recommend selecting a canon that you're at least familiar with, even though you've not consumed it. For example, a popular film franchise that you've heard a lot about but never actually seen, or a video game series that you've never played, but have read fic for.
What counts as osmosis?
Basically anything short of actually consuming the canon! It is acceptable for you to have:
• read a wiki
• consumed fanworks (fic, art, meta, etc.)
• seen commercials/trailers
• followed discussions on twitter/tumblr/reddit/etc.
We're pretty flexible and certainly won't be checking, so we trust participants to use their best judgement. Some people have brought up whether it's acceptable to offer a fandom if they've consumed only a part of a canon (or viewed part of a letsplay) e.g. offering Supernatural when you've only seen s1 back when it aired in 2005. A good rule of thumb is if you feel as though you couldn't possibly create a fanwork without doing a canon review, then it's fine! We'd prefer to encourage participants to select canons in the spirit of the exchange rather than implement any strict rules surrounding this.
Nominations:
You may nominate characters, ships, and freeforms for this exchange. These are designed to guide your creator and act as a stand-in for prompts. There are no DNWs in this exchange, so attempting to slip in a DNW as a tag will be rejected. If you can phrase it as a like, you can keep it. For example, "DNW incest" would get rejected, while "Unrelated characters having sex" would be approved. Focus on the thing you do like, not the thing you don't. Other than that, go wild!
As matching is based on fandom, please disambiguate your canons and avoid umbrella fandoms wherever possible. For example, Black Panther should be nominated as Black Panther (movies), not under Marvel Cinematic Universe. This specificity is to avoid accidentally matching on a fandom you're familiar with (i.e. what would be a perfect match in any other exchange). Please only offer umbrella fandoms like MCU if you are unfamiliar with all aspects of it; mods will handmatch if necessary.
Requests/Offers:
You must request and offer 3-10 fandoms. Crossovers are allowed and each count as one.
Matching:
Matching is on fandom only. Freeforms, ships, and characters are optional details and are there to give your author or artist a better idea of what you like. Anyone who is unmatchable will have their sign up deleted, so be sure to keep an eye on requests!
Requirements:
1) The minimum wordcount for fics is 300 words.
2) Minimum requirement for art is a sketch on unlined paper. If you are producing art, it must be for a non-visual canon, or it must depict an aspect of canon that you only know via osmosis. The reason for this is that drawing a character portrait from a visual canon isn't really in the spirit of the exchange. Participants are encouraged to use their own discretion here; feel free to run it by one of the mods if you're unsure.
3) Treats are welcome and have no minimum requirements.
4) Despite the nature of this exchange, we encourage participants to make a good faith effort; this is not a badfic exchange.
Posting:
To post your work, go to the assignments page and click "fulfill", or else click here and manually enter your recipient's username. If you would prefer that your work does not appear in the fandom tag, it's possible to type Undisclosed Fandom into the "Fandoms" field instead. We also encourage participants to disclose that this was written for the Osmosis Exchange in the A/N or summary for the benefit of the people browsing the fandom tag.
Pinch hits:
Pinch hits will be offered in the Exchanges After Dark discord. If a pinch hit lingers it will be posted at this comm. We make no guarantees that everyone will receive a gift, but we will try our best.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please comment here or else contact myself (ictus) or Soulstoned on discord!
